The loss of biodiversity and the effects of climate change threaten agricultural production and global food security. Family agriculture (97 percent of agricultural units-AU) in Peru is facing challenges in producing food sustainably. The adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices (CSA) and the conservation of agrobiodiversity are essential for the sustainability of Peruvian agriculture in the face of climate change. It was the objective of the study to characterize and classify agrobiodiversity of family AUs in the Crisnejas basin (Cajamarca and La Libertad) and evaluate economic factors that influence farmers' decision to apply multiple ACI options. To analyze ACI adoption decisions, 340 family AUs were surveyed using a multivariate and ordered probit analysis framework. The results indicate that AUs with lower agrobiodiversity earn more per month than AUs with higher agrobiodiversity. According to the econometric results, the factors driving farmers' decisions to adopt and intensify the use of ACI practices are altitude, tenure, age, cultivated area, agrobiodiversity level, and water availability. Higher levels of educational attainment, a larger number of household members, and a greater distance to local markets are associated with an increase in ACI practices in the lower, middle, and upper basins, respectively. The distance to farms, cultivated area, and seed storage are also factors associated with the intensity of ACI use. The results indicate that increasing agrobiodiversity is critical for the achievement of a functional and balanced system, from an economic, ecological, and sociocultural point of view, and that addressing the effects of climate change on Peruvian agriculture requires carefully designed adaptation/mitigation strategies.
