The aim of this study was to design and to perform an economic evaluation of a communitybased breeding program (PCMG) for K`ara lama (Lama glama) at Marcapomacocha District, Junín. The breeding program aim were to increase body weight gain between weaning age and 1 year old, and to minimize the rate of inbreeding. The selection criteria were weaning weight, body weight at one year old, and weight gain between weaning age and one year old (GPV). The data collection methodology for both performance and genealogy were designed, and a Lama System Software was implemented. The selection of males was made by visual assessment and performance test. The genetic structure proposal had two levels: A nucleus and the farmers’ herds. The communal nucleus was open and central, and its size was fit to 200 females with a 5% males in order to cover the demand of males from both the nucleus and farmers’ herds. The mating system at nucleus level was controlled mating with rotation of males, and at farmers’ herds was only rotation of selected males. The estimated genetic progress for GPV was 0.151 and 2.605 kg./generation for the current situation and the PCMG, respectively. The Economic Net Present Value (VANE) and Internal Rate of Economic Return (TIRE) of PCMG for 15 years were US $ 72,981.66 and 16.18%, respectively.
