This research was born to find an alternative, different from the final disposal in a landfill, for spent abrasive used in surface preparation, seeking to incorporate it into a production process that allows the transition to the circular economy of this resource. Given that there are successful experiences of the use of different types of waste as inputs for the manufacture of masonry units, it was proposed to explore the possibility that spent abrasive (such as garnet) used in surface preparation through techniques such as dry abrasive blasting and wet abrasive blasting can be used as a partial replacement of fine aggregates for the manufacture of type I paving stones. To this end, using the ACI 211 method, a type I paving stone was designed using recycled aggregates from construction waste, being later the recycled fine aggregates replaced by 15, 30 and 50 percent; respectively, with spent abrasive (garnet) used in surface preparation by dry abrasive blasting and wet abrasive blasting techniques, respectively; thus counting on seven treatments in total. Then, according to NTP 399.611, compressive strength (at 7, 14 and 28 days), absorption (at 7 and 28 days) and dimensional tolerance tests were performed; in order to be able to determine if the manufactured paving stones met the minimum quality requirements for their use. Finally, it was determined that only the paving stones with 50 percent replacement of the fine recycled aggregate by spent abrasive (garnet) from the wet abrasive blasting technique exceeded the resistance of 340 kg/cm2, as well as the dimensional tolerance criteria allowed according to NTP 399.611.
