In recent years in the asparagus sectors of Macabi, El Alto and La Arenita, in Paijan, La Libertad it has been reported a high incidence of the phytophagous Proarna bergi Distant. known as “chicharra“ whose nymphs suck the sap from the roots and progressively weaken the plantation. The chemical control of this pest is complicated, the availability of the selective active ingredients and of low persistence is decreasing, and high application volumes are required with the consequent risk of accumulation of waste. The use of entomopathogenic nematodes due to the great advantages that they have, as polyphagous, persistent and with great search capacity, places them as an alternative of sustainable and low impact biological control. That is why the objective of this research was to collect soil samples from asparagus fields with the pest to isolate and identify native entomopathogenic nematodes and evaluate their effect on the nymphs of Proarna bergie. From the soil samples, using larvae of Galleria mellonella as a “bait insect“, three strains of entomopathogenic nematodes that were encoded as NE1, NE2 and NE3, were isolated. Native strains recorded Galleria mellonella larvae mortality levels of 94.44, 98.88 and 96.66%, respectively and produced on average 401 766, 378 133 and 368 666 infectious juveniles per larva. All the doses (50,100,150,250,500,750,100,1250 and 1500) of JIs evaluated affected the nymphs of Proarna bergie. The PROBIT analysis of the percentage of mortality and infection time yielded an LD50 of 119.9 JI, an LD90 of 180.21 JI and TL50 of 65.32 hours. The morphometric characteristics of the infectious juveniles and males of the strains in study are similar or are within the specific ranges for the species of the genus Heterorhabditis. The molecular analysis of the three native strains identified them as Heterorhabditis indica. The evaluated doses of 2000, 3000 and 4000 G. mellonella larvae with infectious juveniles of Heterorhabditis indica produced 22.23, 42.77 and 57.6% mortality of Proarna bergie nymphs in field.
