The objective of the present degree work was to evaluate the performance of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Management Systems, in 2021, of a small-scale solid waste management company that handles hazardous and non-hazardous waste. The performance evaluation method used was an adaptation of Chang and Liang’s Safety Index, which is recognized as one of the most influential performance indicators in the scientific literature. The step followed were: i) identify OHS legal regulation as of 2021applicable to the company, ii) determine a checklist of OHS requirements for the company, iii) propose a methodology adapted from Chang and Liang (2009) for performance evaluation; iv) analyze and evaluate the components of the company’s OHS management system, and v) propose opportunities for improvement for the OHS management system. The findings revealed that the company’s performance in 2021 achieved only 34,61% compliance. Notably, the attribute with the highest compliance rate (65%) pertained to the management of personal protective equipment (PPE), primarily due to the company’s recognition of PPE as a vital protection measure and constant supervision of their use by the industrial clients. Conversely, the attribute with greatest weight regarding “high level commitment” showed a mere 28% compliance rate. The poor performance of the company’s OHS management system can be attributed to a combination of factors including inadequate national legislation for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), the unique characteristics of small-scale waste companies, and low awareness and technical capacity in occupational health and safety practices.
