Objective: to determine the in vitro antibacterial effect of ethanolic extract of leaves of Bixa orellana L.(annatto) against Proteus mirabilis ATCC 29906. Materials and methods: quantitative approach, experimental design; 10 kilos of leaves of Bixa orellana L. were used; sample of 3 kg of leaves; on the other hand, 10 Petri dishes inoculated with Proteus mirabilis ATCC 29906 were used. The phytochemical march and the microbiological method of diffusion were carried out on agar, consisting of groups of 25%, 50% and 75% of ethanolic extract and ciprofloxacin 5 μg and ethanol 96°. Results: the presence of phenolic compounds, flavonoids, alkaloids, α lactones, β-unsaturated acids, and tannins was detected. For statistical analysis, the ANOVA test was used, obtaining a (p<0.05). In addition, inhibition halos of 12.85 mm were evidenced for 50% and 16.56 mm for 75%; however, experimental concentrations did not exceed ciprofloxacin 5 μg. Conclusion: the ethanolic extract of the leaves of Bixa orellana L. (annatto) showed antibacterial effect at concentrations of 50% and 75% on strains of Proteus mirabilis ATCC 29906.
