Migration waves in the last century have been influenced by rapid economic and labor growth in certain geographical areas, as well as political conflicts and economic crisis in vulnerable countries. This research paper reviews the primary existing literature on the effect of migration on the wages of native workers with lower levels of education. We segregate the empirical evidence based on whether the receiving country is developed or developing, as the effect is influenced by the specific characteristics of each economy. We find that the impact on wages of less educated natives in developed countries is mixed, depending on the degree of complementarity between natives and migrants. Conversely, in developing regions, the evidence indicates a negative and more pronounced effect. We argue that this is due to developing countries having, on average, lower educational levels, higher informality, lower integration costs for migrants, and firms possessing less capital, thus unable to adjust their production in the face of increased unskilled labor.
