The present study focuses on the effect of foreign education on the occupational mobility of migrants. In the theoretical framework, it refers to the convexity of occupational mobility, which has a “U”-shape with respect to the last job in the country of origin and the first job in the country of destination, as well as the depth of said “U”-shaped pattern. Empirical evidence indicates that migrants suffer a notable decrease in their occupational quality, due to an imperfect transfer of skills and knowledge acquired in their countries of origin when they emigrated to a foreign country. These difficulties are mainly based on differences in language, quality of trained human capital and problems with the revalidation or accreditation of qualifications acquired abroad. However, migrants compensate over the years these difficulties in transferring skills by learning the language, greater familiarity with local customs, better understanding of the labor market of the destination country, and investments in education and credentials, which translates into better economic income in the medium and long term.
