The main objective of this research is the study of the technical - environmental viability of the application of pellets based on exoskeletons of shrimps and scallops as adsorbents for the removal of heavy metals in water. Arsenic is a natural element with metallic and non-metallic properties, prolonged exposure to inorganic arsenic can cause chronic intoxication, it can be found in four oxidation states: 0 (elemental), +3 (trivalent, arsenites), +5 (pentavalent, arsenates) and -3 (arsine), both the organic and inorganic trivalent forms are more toxic than the pentavalent ones. The WHO has found large concentrations of arsenic in drinking water in La Oroya where lead, copper and zinc are processed. In this context to contribute with the environment and decontaminate the water of industry mining, it has been proposed to make the powder of scallop shells and chitin of shrimps to produce compacted pellets with Tara gum. The powder of scallop shells contains mainly calcium carbonate, and the chitin studied by various researchers has great adsorption properties for pollutants. The most effective pellet after laboratory tests was of the following composition: 30% chitin and 70% scallop powder, this pellets remove 20% arsenic after 90 minutes.
