This document aims to review the latest academic literature that studies the design and implementation of Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDC). It touches on the main trends concerning means of payments and their economic impact, as well as possible designs for the introduction of a CBDC. It also makes a theoretical assessment of the possible impacts that they could have on macroeconomic variables, and the transmission mechanisms of monetary policy. Of special interest is the capacity of CBDCs to erode the intermediary role of banks and their ability to channel deposits into profitable loans. However, they also have the potential to increase financial inclusion among previously excluded individuals. Next, it discusses the inclusion of CBDCs in general equilibrium models that emphasize the role of bank lending, means of payments, and liquidity management. Finally, it goes over a high-level review of the latest developments regarding CBDCs in Peru, as well as some recommendations for optimal implementation.
