The increase of greenhouse gas emissions due to combustion processes in different sectors and industries will generate critical environmental scenarios by 2050. Because of this important reason, to mitigate these emissions in the industrial sector, there are different CO2 capture and storage processes that are typically developed in pre-, post- and oxy-fuel systems, generally based on absorption and adsorption technologies for flue gas emissions from a plant. Likewise, the literature related to technologies based on CO2 capture and utilization has increased in the last 10 years, proposing this gas as an alternative to take advantage as a raw material to obtain chemical products such as ethylene, dimethyl ether, BTX and others. Therefore, this work explores the different technologies to capture and transform CO2 emissions from process plants into dimethyl ether (DME), a compound with low environmental impact and used in different industries such as fuels or aerosols. It includes a review of CO2 capture technologies of the last 20 years and an analysis of the selection of CO2 absorption processes with amines. For CO2 utilization technologies, a review of the technologies of the pre-reforming, dry reforming and direct DME synthesis processes concludes that the synthesis gas production as an intermediate product is essential to synthesize DME. Lastly, the appropriate operating conditions for each reactive stage are determined.
