The need for third-party intervention in the arduous task of conserving the Amazonian and Andean tropical forests leads to questioning the positions on the involvement of the private sector in the task of conservation. Eighteen interviews with the public sector, NGOs and private companies, and the review of various official documents give a clear picture of the viability of social companies that play an active role in forest conservation in a country as biodiverse and threatened as Peru. The ecotourism and the carbon offsets appear to be an excellent mechanism for economic sustainability; however, the lack of regulation for the carbon offsets, and the financial struggles for the development of the tourism activity are evident barriers for its development. Furthermore, social enterprises are yet to be regulated; therefore, the non-regulated philanthropic expectation of conservation activity, makes the conservation an unattractive economic activity, because of the difficulties to assess its worth in an economic capital manner.
