The effect of corrosion is a phenomenon that causes many economic losses in industries worldwide, since it causes the destruction of the material of the components of different equipment. Heat exchangers are an example of this, since these machines are used in industries for different heating or cooling processes, using corrosive fluids. For this reason, it is that its components such as pipes, shells and baffles are made of stainless steels, due to their corrosive resistance properties. Among the most used stainless steels for the manufacture of these components are: AISI 316L and AISI 304L, since they belong to the classification of austenitic stainless steels and have a high resistance corrosion. However, the cost of these stainless steels is very high, and it is for this reason that the manufacture of heat exchangers is currently expensive. This has led to the intention in this present thesis to carry out a comparative analysis of corrosion resistance of austenitic stainless steel AISI 316L and ferritic AISI 430, which has a lower cost. All this, in order to determine if this steel is capable of allowing good corrosion resistance in shell and tube heat exchangers. The method by which the tests will be carried out will be through the Tafel extrapolation electrochemical technique, which will allow us to know the general corrosion rate of the material. In addition, a cyclic polarization test will be performed to analyze the pitting corrosion of the materials. All these tests will be carried out in a solution of 3.5% and 3.0% of sodium chloride (NaCl), in a medium with an ambient temperature of 25 ± 1 ° C. Finally, with the results obtained, the corrosive performance of ferritic stainless steel can be compared.
