Mining in Peru and across the world is behind many other industry sectors regarding digitalization. However, large-scale mining companies have been promoting initiatives that include technological solutions to improve processes, allow better decisions making and generate competitive advantages. The benefits are not only for the companies se but also the country. Cerro Company is a mining company which operates in Peru and is working on technological projects for its strategic processes to create value and achieve operational excellence. In this context, it was found in the loading and hauling process that cargo trucks are not filled to optimal capacity, and in some occasions the weight limit is exceeded, generating inefficiencies and risks of equipment failure due to overloading. Therefore, it was decided to implement a system called “Pala Digital”, which provides shovel operators a visual tool to help them increase the average load and reduce variability. The implementation of the tool was carried out as a pilot project divided by stages, in which a mining shovel and four operators were selected to test the solution for a period of 18 weeks. Regarding the methodology for the project, concepts of Lean Manufacturing and Statistical Process Control were applied to ensure and evaluate the success of the project. Results indicated positive effects in the process, achieving a 3.7% increase in the average load in all four truck models and reducing the standard deviation for three models by 15.16%. Based on these results and considering a scenario where the tool is installed on the other six mining shovels, we estimate an annual benefit of $ 3.7M due to increase in production and savings of $ 929K for maintenance costs. However, this project should be executed on other mining shovels to analyze the performance of the tool under different conditions.
