This document presents the methodology and design of an ore sorter prototype to carry out tests at laboratory scale using gold and silver ore from a mine located in the south of Ayacucho. As a result from this investigation, the operating parameters of the prototype were defined, in which 150 ore particles a day between 20 and 75 mm in diameter will be processed. Then, following the VDI 2221 standard, a suitable design solution for the operating requirements was selected. A belt-type ore sorter prototype was designed with paddle ejectors driven by 3 Mitsubishi HF-SP52 0.5 kW servo-motors. The conveyor belt transmission was designed using 6061 T6 aluminum bevel gears and shafts for a 0.25 HP Siemens Nema 56 motor. The mechanical ejector drive was also developed using AISI 1045 steel to design a bevel gear train. The mechanical component design was combined with CAD design to define the complete geometry of the ore sorter. Simulations in Rocky DEM were used to validate the free fall and ejection trajectories of the particles. It was determined that the paddle ejectors, at a belt speed of 0.5 m/s, must rotate at 150 rpm and use 5.59 Nm of torque to be able to successfully eject the particles. Finally, a study of surface wear was carried out where it was possible to verify that both the surface of the paddle ejectors and that of the particle bins will not wear more than 1 mm throughout the prototype’s operating life.
