The present research work focuses on the evaluation of stresses acting on a shovel Hitachi EX5600-6 bucket, operating on a mining project. A linkage between the discrete element method and the finite element method will be used. It is expected to know the bucket zones where the metal reinforcements will be applied, increasing the life span of the equipment. The discrete element method is applied through simulations on Rocky-DEM software. The acting force in the bucket generated by the loading of rock particles is calculated by the software. The input data for these simulations are the physical properties of the bodies in contact. This result will be verified through a comparison with a loading forcé calculated mathematically using the FEE classic model (Fundamental Earth Moving Equation). The output of Rocky – DEM simulations for a real excavation force was an average of 300kN, while the analytical was 296kN, obtaining a precision of 98%. The previous simulation result is introduced to ANSYS, a software which uses the finite element method to determine the acting stresses on the bucket. The location of the reinforcements was validated through a comparison with an applied reinforcements maintenance history for the bucket. In order to facilitate the validation, the bucket was divided in sections, implementing a fractionation percentage applied to stresses and reinforcements in accordance with the total area of each section. The lowest coincidence percentage of 67% and highest of 95% validate the previous applied reinforcements location.
