libre.
This investigation examines the factors that enable or restrict the participation in sports or physical activities in adults in the United Kingdom in 2001 and 2015. The statistical analysis of the “United Kingdom Time Use Survey – UKTUS”, allows us to determine to what extent, the structural mechanisms related to gender, age, level of education, economic situation and status of health affect the sports participation in adults. Additionally, this research considers the role played by the time devoted to the use of mass media and technology in the decision of adults to get involved in sports and physical activities. The results of this research indicate that although the levels of sports participation have increased significantly from 2001 to 2015, it is still strongly affected by structural mechanisms. On the other hand, the time devoted to the use of technology has also shown a significant growth. However, the current evidence suggests that technology does not completely replace time that adults spend in sports and physical activities, but can be used as a tool to promote its practice. Thus, the understanding of sports participation in adults helps us to identify certain gaps and inequalities that arise from its practice, as well as debunk stereotypes and prejudices associated with the use of technologies in their leisure or free time.
