The present research aimed to characterize and determine the composition and structure of benthic macroinvertebrate communities MIB from San Alberto river basin, and to infer about its water quality. Four quarterly monitoring was carried out, and a pilot sampling (April 2012 – April 2013), three monitoring zones was established, taxa, physicochemical parameters and basin conditions were recorded, and applied biotics indices were applied, and the correlation between MIB structure and others factors or criteria was also analyzed. 58 taxa and 9 303 individuals were determined, being the most abundant families: Simuliidae, Chironomidae, Leptoceridae, Baetidae y Glossosomatidae. The basin zones report normal or high alpha diversity (H’≥ 2.51), with a beta similarity (Ss) greater than 42%. On the other hand, after a possible event of ecological succession the alpha and beta values decrease (H’=1.59; Ss≥ 21%). Six space and nine trophies guilds were determined, whose morphogroups would have a correlation with the ecological succession event (V Cramer: 4.12 y 0.331) and the basin zone (V Cramer: 0.153 y 0.283). Regarding the qualification of the basin, the biotic indices of quality vary, good (IBF:4.57), regular (EPT:49%) and very good (IBA:268), the low zone would report the lowest qualification. When analyzing the functional groups (sensitivity) to contaminating factors, a greater correlation of their morphogroups was determined about to pH (V Cramer = 0,608), followed by dissolved oxygen, sampling period and zone, temperature, salinity and total dissolved solid (V Cramer: 0,577 - 0.402), lastly, nitrates, potassium, sampling method and ecological succession (V Cramer: 0,347 - 0.079). In summary, it can be claimed that the water quality, ecological conditions and biodiversity of the basin seen from the different bioindicators, characterizations and indexes of biodiversity, represent normal conditions, for attention in the low zone.
