The extraction of natural resources is an economically important activity in the South of Peru; however, the conflict caused by mining can generate immeasurable material and human losses. This research examines the effect that international prices of minerals have on mining conflict, as well as the reasons why social mobilization and conflict generates in the southern region of Peru. We use information from the World Bank and the Defensoría del Pueblo to identify three types of conflict: Conflict due to environmental pollution, rejection of the mining sector and claims of benefits to the mining sector. We use the two-way fixed effects estimator to identify the impact of prices on the mining conflict. The results indicate that an increase in the prices of international products generate mining conflict associated with environmental pollution, increasing the conflict by up to 53%. Two mechanisms by which the greatest mining conflict is generated are also identified. First, mines with a high degree of contamination such as contaminating tin and gold pollutants have a greater probability of mining conflict, generating an increase in social conflict of 18%.. Second, local governments do not use the Mining Canon in an efficient way to appease the strikes and protests of the communities in the face of the environmental degradation of their territory. Keywords: Mining conflict, commodities, mining canon, spending capacity, two-way fixed effects.
