Pollution indices are instruments that allow a quick interpretation of water quality, combine physical, chemical and microbiological parameters to generate a numerical value. The objective of the work was to formulate water contamination indices for a high Andean river in the case of the Chumbao Sub-basin, as a tool for water monitoring. Data information on water parameters of the Chumbao subbasin was collected, corresponding to the 2018-2019 monitoring period, the laboratory and field analysis methods were developed following the methodology proposed by the Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater, United States Environmental Protection Agency y Manual of water and environmental technology. The data on water parameters were evaluated by multivariate analysis, in addition, the ECA levels proposed by MINAM were considered. The parameters with the highest incidence on water quality were color, conductivity, DO, BOD, ammonia, phosphorus, lead, chromium, and thermotolerant coliforms. The inorganic contamination index was formulated based on conductivity, lead and chromium, reporting levels of contamination between “none” to “high”; and the organic contamination index that includes DO, BOD, ammonia, phosphorus, color and thermotolerant coliforms, reporting “low“ to “very high“ contamination, for the river water of the Chumbao Sub-basin, evaluated during the dry season of the year 2021 in 6 sectors along the river. It is concluded that the proposed contamination indices are water management instruments that allow the evaluation of water quality.
