The process of differentiation of the self is going to be decisive in the psychosocial development of the adolescent. The objective of this study was to describe the maternal perception of the self-differentiation process in adolescents from single-parent families. It is proposed from a qualitative approach, under a reflective thematic analysis design, 8 mothers from this type of family participated and the semi-structured interview was used as an instrument for collecting information. Four themes of interest were found, (1) Cognitive changes of adolescents perceived by mothers, thus, behavioral changes and the need for support in decision-making to feel safer are identified. (2) Emotional changes and identification of emotions in adolescents, related to the experiences they have been going through; In this regard, the participants assume that their children will be emotionally aware, due to the situations they have to face. (3) Autonomy in adolescence, mothers mention that there is a close bond between them and their children and identify that they will demand that their private spaces and situations that they do not want to discuss be respected. Finally, regarding the perception of the adolescent's (4) independence, it is mentioned that there will be difficulties in managing agreements and limits. In conclusion, mothers perceive the process of differentiation of their adolescent children's self as a process of changes around cognitions, emotions, autonomy and independence.
