Abstract Global warming is one of the most important environmental challenges facing the world today, with a significant impact on our planet's ecosystem, including agriculture. Rising temperatures, changes in precipitation patterns, and extreme weather events caused by global warming have affected crop yields, soil health, and water availability, causing significant damage to agriculture. In this context, it is essential to understand the effects of global warming on agriculture to mitigate its impact and find sustainable solutions for food production. To this end, the present research sought to study the effects of extreme temperatures on the demand for factors of subsistence farmers in the Cusco region. Use was made of a set of monthly global land surface temperature data derived from the Terra Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument together with georeferenced information from the INEI National Household Survey. Reduced forms were developed that take advantage of the variation in temperature between locations. These reduced forms are estimated through OLS, including district-level fixed effects and a rich set of controls derived from the ENAHO. Key findings indicate that extreme temperatures can cause up to a 45% decline in total factor productivity and a 39% drop in output. Part of this variation in productivity is due to alterations in the labor factor, showing a 16% decrease in the number of people in the household involved in agricultural work during the period studied.
