The research was developed with the objective of demonstrating the influence of paraphrasing techniques and the summary in the improvement of the understanding of continuous and discontinuous texts in the fourth grade students of Secondary Education of the Educational Institution "San Andrés" of Santa Teresa of Queromarca - Cutervo. The study corresponds to an explanatory investigation; of pre experimental design. A non-probabilistic sample consisting of a group of 26 students was considered and, according to the design, the pretest of comprehension of continuous and discontinuous texts was administered before the application of the paraphrase and summary techniques. Likewise, the posttest was administered once the aforementioned techniques were applied. Finally, the statistical results indicate that before the paraphrasing techniques and the summary, 100% of the students were disapproved and after the application of the paraphrasing techniques and the summary, 100% of the students were approved. Therefore, it can be concluded that the techniques of paraphrasing and summarizing allowed to significantly improve the understanding of continuous and discontinuous texts in its three levels: literal, inferential and critical.
