This study investigated the correlation between emotional intelligence and academic performance in a population of secondary education. Emotional intelligence is the set of cognitive skills for effective emotional control (Mayer et al., 1999), while academic performance is the ability to acquire skills, abilities, and knowledge in school (MINEDU, 2019). In recent years, emotional intelligence has had implications in the school context, in the learning and socio-emotional process (UNICEF, 2019). The study used a quantitative methodology with a non-experimental correlational design and a single measurement (cross-sectional). The sample of the study was composed of 175 participants who were surveyed using the BarOn Emotional Quotient Inventory-Youth Version (adapted by Ugarriza and Pajares, 2006) and their academic records. The results showed a significant, moderate correlation between emotional intelligence and academic performance (Sig.: .000 and Rho= .429). It can be concluded that higher emotional intelligence is associated with higher academic performance in secondary school students from a national school in Lima, 2021.
