The digitization of life is propitiated by the hoarding of social media, which is presented as a transforming agent in the way information is consumed. The constant evolution of ICTs offers social media the possibility of being used in different aspects that can influence or guide the process of forming public opinion. In this sense, the research analyzes the role of Twitter in the formation of public opinion in millennial and centennial university students in the city of Trujillo (Peru) between 2020 and 2022. To achieve the objectives of the research, a study of mixed approach, with an explanatory scope and longitudinal non-experimental design, using the survey, interviews and content analysis as techniques. In this way, information was collected on the trending content generated on Twitter over 30 weeks in two different years (15 weeks in 2020 and 15 weeks in 2022) and more than 300 trends analyzed, 120 representative tweets and 60 headlines from two digital media in the country. Among the main results of the research, there is evidence of a thematic relationship between the trends hosted on Twitter and the news broadcast by the web portals of the main media in the country. Political trends were the most recurrent among the tweets, in second place, entertainment and entertainment and, in third place, but constantly, those referring to the pandemic. In addition, the study indicates that there is a media agenda, a product of the feedback between users' opinions on networks, digital media news and media political action. Finally, it was found that in 2020 the majority of users identified themselves with the political left, while in 2022 the percentage of users from both the left and the right had an apolitical stance added, this reflects a possible general mistrust in the political class, the centrist sector remains stable.
