ABSTRACT Artificial Intelligence, is increasingly present in various human activities, technological advances are the support of multiple automated processes aimed at optimizing the overall operation in a project; In mining, there are many critical activities that deserve significant attention; among them the geomechanics, which represents the fundamental study carried out throughout the development of a mining project, mainly in the exploration, design and exploitation phases. This review seeks to harmonize the application of Artificial Intelligence and its techniques (such as neural networks) with the estimation of the geomechanical characteristics of a rock mass. In the academic databases such as Scielo, Redalyc, Researchgate and the Google Academic search engine, there is information regarding this topic, in this sense, it is so, a systematic review of this literature, corresponding to the period 2008 - 2018, has been carried out. that allows us to analyze the evidence found regarding: a) Artificial Intelligence and neural networks, b) the geomechanical characterization of the rock mass and c) Its efficient interrelation and use of its operational advantages. keywords: Artificial Intelligence, Neural Networks, Geomechanical Characterization, Rock Massif
