ABSTRACT This work stems from the need to improve production processes and increase productivity of the company, a key factor for this is the plant layout with proper use of space, less attention factor that lend you in the metalworking companies. The main objective of this work is to determine the relationship between the plant layout (DP) and productivity in manufacturing spool in an engineering company, which must serve to consider proposals for improvements in the production process of the company. Determining spool manufacturing process prioritized to know the causes of the problem to select enhancement tools such as System Layout Planning (SLP), as well as some lean manufacturing tools like 5S, Kanban, Jidoka, and Andon to mixing it, trying to mitigate these main causes. Then, a technical and economic evaluation was carried out showing the results of the impact of applying these tools, thus achieving a 92% increase over the current (993 m2) in the effective use of plant spaces thanks to a new DP. As for the productivity of the spool area in general increase by 13%, in the assembly section increase by 9%, in the welding section productivity experienced an increase of 13%, in the section of QC productivity rose by 14%; As well as financial techniques such as TIR (61%), VAN ($ 1 805.03), B/C (1.6), showing the feasibility of a project to implement a new DP for the spool area. Finally, this work exposed the conclusions that this proposal of implement a new DP would have, like so recommendations for maintenance and sustainability of this implementation.
