The present study aim to investigate the relationships between perfectionism (perfectionistic strivings and perfectionistic concerns), motivation (autonomous motivation and controlled motivation), academic cognitive engagement and academic burnout. The sample consisted of 223 students (µ=20.31, DE=2.91) from one university in Lima. The instruments used for the measurement of the constructs were short form of the Almost Perfect Scale, Self-Regulation Scale-R, Deep Learning Measure, and Maslach Inventory Inventory Students Survey [MBISS]. Each one of these instruments had adequate psychometric properties. The most important results were that there was not a significant relationship between the two dimensions of perfectionism and academic cognitive engagement. The path analysis shows that autonomous motivation and controlled motivation completely mediated the relationship between perfectionistic strivings and academic burnout. With this same analysis, it was found that autonomous motivation and controlled motivation partially mediated the positive relationship between perfectionistic concerns and academic burnout. These results were discussed based on contributions from self-determination theory and studies from the academic and sports contexts. Finally, recommendations were based on the discussion of the findings.
