The purpose of this study is to deepen the knowledge of the participation of the Peruvian Army in humanitarian demining in the Peruvian-Ecuadorian border region of the Cordillera del Condor between 2015 and 2019, and in the commitments assumed by Peru in the Ottawa Treaty. Its general objective is to analyze the role of the Army in demining and in the commitments of the Convention, addressing the following specific objectives: i) describing demining operations; ii) explain the limitations in operations; and iii) establish the causes of said limitations. The thesis discusses the concepts of human security and the role of the armed forces from the case of demining in the Cordillera del Condor. The research is qualitative in approach and explores the topic from the perspective of its participants. Documentary sources, images, observation, annotations and interviews with actors in the humanitarian demining process were used for data collection, analyzing them with the grounded theory procedure. The results obtained in the study allow us to conclude that the Peruvian Army, based on its assigned capacities and means, and on the existing limitations, plays the main role in the humanitarian demining carried out in the Cordillera del Condor. Likewise, the results of its technical operational function have a direct impact on the fulfillment of the obligations acquired by Peru in the Convention for the prohibition of antipersonnel mines.
