The main objective of this study is to demonstrate the effect that electrical energy produced by non-renewable and conventional sources has on the environment and its degradation in Peru at the regional level, in order to propose policies that encourage the use of renewable energies. We worked with a random effects model with panel data to prove the relationship between the main variables; ecological footprint per capita and electricity production per capita from non-renewable and conventional sources, for the study period 2003-2016. In addition, control variables are used, such as financial development and a Dummy that represents clean energy usage policies. The empirical results indicate a positive relationship between the environmental degradation, measured by the ecological footprint per capita, and the production of electricity per capita from non-renewable and conventional sources.
