This research analyzes the evolution of the trade policy of the United States and its influence, both in the commercial activity of the Latin American countries, and in the multilateral trade system, within the framework of the World Trade Organization, in the period 2000-2019. Qualitative techniques were used, such as 10 interviews with experts in this field and data collection; and quantitative techniques, such as the analysis of data published by international organizations. Both results, qualitative and quantitative, were contrasted for the analysis. The main findings, allowed to identify the effects of United States trade policy over Latin American countries, and the opportunities that this situation produces, for them to expand their international market. Another relevant finding is the weakening of the multilateralism, because of the protectionist tendencies that were implemented during Donald Trump. However, the participation of emerging countries represents an opportunity to strengthen the multilateralism, which have not been significant in recent decades. All this has led us to the conclusion that Latin American countries must evaluate its policies at a country level to deal with the instability of the United States trade policy manifested in recent years (2016-2019). In relation to the multilateral system, it is concluded that the countries of the region, by joining as a bloc, can have greater influence in this type of organization, giving multilateralism a second chance, given the protectionist tendencies of the United States.
