To achieve this objective, a review of the literature was carried out and rigorous inclusion and exclusion criteria were met for the selection of the articles, as well as following the guidelines of the PRISMA declaration (Urrutía & Bonfill, 2013). The results revealed a positive and significant relationship between burnout syndrome and depressive symptoms. Likewise, two studies considered burnout syndrome as a risk factor for the development of depressive symptoms. The limitations of the present investigation were the variety of instruments used to measure the variables, the low number of participants and the omission of the information on the reliability and validity of some articles.
