The purpose of this study was to establish the relationship between self-esteem and emotional intelligence in a sample of 187 students of both sexes, aged 13 to 18 years, attending 3rd to 5th grade of secondary school in a school in the district of San Juan de Miraflores, Lima, Peru. The methodology was basic, non-experimental, and correlational, with a non-probabilistic convenience sampling. The instruments applied were the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory (Coopersmith, 1967) and the Bar-On Emotional Intelligence Inventory ICE:Na (Bar-On, 1997). The results showed that the majority of students had moderate levels of self-esteem (56.1%) and emotional intelligence (55.1%). Additionally, a correlation was found between self-esteem and emotional intelligence (rs = 0.215, p = 0.00). Furthermore, self-esteem correlated with dimensions of emotional intelligence such as interpersonal (rs = 0.237), adaptability (rs = 0.239), and general mood (rs = 0.312). However, no correlation was found with the intrapersonal, emotion management, and positive impression dimensions (p > 0.05). In conclusion, these findings imply that a positive self-perception is associated with a greater ability to understand and manage emotions.
