Objective: To demonstrate that prior use of antibiotics is an associated factor for Urinary Tract Infection by extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) producing enterobacteriaceae in hospitalized patients at the medical service of the Regional Teaching Hospital of Trujillo in the period from January 2016 to December 2016. Material and Methods: An analytical, observational, retrospective study of cases and controls was carried out. The sample of the study population was constituted by 102 adult patients that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria, distributed in two groups: 34 cases with positive urine culture for ESBL producing enterobacteriaceae and 68 controls with positive urine culture for NON ESBL producing enterobacteriaceae. Results: It was noted that the prior use of antibiotics is an associated factor for urinary tract infection by ESBL producing enterobacteriaceae showing a significant result (OR=9,02 I.C. 95%: 3,46 - 23,5, p = 0.001 < 0.05). Of patients with urinary tract infection by ESBLproducing enterobacteria, 76.5% previously received antibiotics. Of the antibiotics used it was found with the greatest use of only cephalosporins in 29.4%, followed from the use prior of two families of antimicrobials (cephalosporins and fluoroquinolones) in a 23.5%. The microorganism more frequently isolated was E. coli in a 73.5%, in a second place K. pneumoniae in a 20.6. With respect to sex, 52.9% of patients with urinary tract infection by ESBL producing enterobacteriaceae were found to be female while 47.1% were male. Conclusions: Prior use of antibiotics is an associated factor for infection of the urinary tract by ESBL producing Enterobacteriaceae in hospitalized patients in a medical service service of the Regional Teaching Hospital of Trujillo in the period from January 2016 to December 2016.
