Determine whether the metabolic syndrome is a risk factor for atrial fibrillation in the Bethlehem Hospital of Trujillo. Methods: A study of, analytical, retrospective, case-control took place. The study population consisted of 273 patients according to inclusion and exclusion criteria established divided into two groups: with and without atrial fibrillation. Results: The frequency of metabolic syndrome in patients with and without atrial fibrillation was 24 % and 9% respectively. The odds ratio of metabolic syndrome in relation to atrial fibrillation was 3.30 ( p < 0.01 ) which was significant, CI 95%: ( 1.28 – 6.28 ) . Conclusions: The metabolic syndrome is a risk factor associated with atrial fibrillation in the Bethlehem Hospital of Trujillo. No significant differences in age, sex and origin between patients in both study groups.
