To determine whether the prematurity and low birth weight are risk factors associated with bronchial asthma in children and adolescents aged 5 to 18 in the Regional Hospital of Cajamarca. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed an observational, analytical, case-control, which evaluated 300 children and adolescents divided into two groups, cases: 100 patients with bronchial asthma and controls: 200 without bronchial asthma. RESULTS: The mean age for the cases group was 8,48 ± 2,95 years and for the control group was 9,04 ± 2,54 years (p > 0,05); 57% of patients in the group of cases were male and in the control group constituted 61% of the patients (p > 0,05). Regarding the history of birth weight was observed that 36% and 23.5% of cases and controls respectively corresponded to the category of low birth weight (p < 0,05), with an OR = 1,83 CI 95 % [1,09 to 3,09] and in regard to the history of prematurity was observed in the group of cases was present in 22% of patients and in the control group was only present in 7,5% (p < 0,001), with an OR = 3,48 CI 95% [1.71 to 7.06]. CONCLUSIONS: A history of prematurity and low birth weight was risk factors associated with bronchial asthma in children and adolescents.
