INTRODUCTION: The elderly is the one who is most at risk of seriously ill from Covid -19. MINSA incorporated the pneumococcal vaccine aimed at the elderly; because the bacteria that cause pneumonia cause numerous deaths. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effectiveness of pneumococcal vaccination in reducing morbidity and mortality from COVID-19 in the elderly in Ancash during 2021. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The study is observational, analytical, retrospective cohort. The sample was the total number of adults aged 60 and over, whose diagnosis was COVID-19 deceased and non-deceased; with pneumococcal vaccine, reported in the HIS MINSA and NOTICOVID systems reported in MINSA open data. For data processing, dynamic tables in Excel were used. To verify the association of variables, the Chi-Square test was obtained in the SPSS version 27.0 program and to estimate the efficacy of the pneumococcal vaccines, the event of interest “death from COVID-19“ is compared between two cohorts. RESULTS: It was possible to verify that there’s a relationship between the pneumococcal vaccination variables in the reduction of morbidity and mortality from COVID-19 in older adults, since the value p=0.000 is less than 0.05. It is evident that there’s approximately one unvaccinated older adult for every three vaccinated. CONCLUSIONS: There is a significant effect of pneumococcal vaccination in reducing morbidity and mortality from COVID-19 in older adults in the Ancash region. Those who weren’t vaccinated have a 2.9 times greater risk of failure compared to those who were vaccinated.
