Objective: To determine the association between academic performance and anemia in primary school children of the Educational Institution Federico Helguero Seminario of Piura, during 2019. Methods: An analytical, observational, prospective, cross-sectional and association study was conducted. A total of 655 primary school students of the Educational Institution Federico Helguero Seminario of Piura, enrolled in this educational center during 2019, were studied. A data collection form was applied and blood samples were taken for hemoglobin dosage. Univariate, bivariate and multivariate statistical analysis was performed in the statistical program Stata v15. Results: A total of 230 primary school students were surveyed, with an average age of 8.9 ± 1.9 years and 51.3% were female. Academic performance was poor in 24.78% and the prevalence of anemia was 15.65% among the surveyed schoolchildren. In the multivariate analysis, the presence of anemia was associated with a 20% higher prevalence (PR: 1.20, 95%CI: 1.16-2.21, p=0.015) of poor academic performance. Another variable associated with poor academic performance was monthly family income of less than 750 soles (PRa: 3.49, 95%CI: 1.84-6.63, p<0.001). Conclusions: In the present study the presence of anemia increased the prevalence of poor academic performance among primary level students.
