The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between personality and job performance in the sales department of a poultry company in metropolitan Lima. The sample consisted of 226 employees with a mean age of 36 years (S.D. = 10.2) and a nearly balanced gender distribution (51.3% men and 48.7% women). Two instruments were used for data collection: the Koopmans Job Performance Inventory, consisting of 16 items with adequate reliability (α = .70), and the Big Five Scale, comprising 44 items with appropriate reliability (α = .88). The results did not show a statistically significant correlation between the variables. However, a significant difference was observed in task performance and extraversion, depending on the job position. In conclusion, the results question the use of personality as a selection criterion, suggesting that factors related to the work environment and organizational support may have a greater influence on performance. These findings imply that assessing these traits is not necessarily beneficial for improving performance and effectiveness in the sales area, and therefore cannot ensure better selection and development of staff.
