The plastics industry is a key sector in many countries, but it is affected by challenges of constant machinery problems that directly impact productivity. This situation can translate into significant costs for companies, generating dissatisfaction among customers and decreasing profitability. This research focuses on a manufacturing company specialized in plastic products, with special attention to the extrusion process. Several drawbacks were identified, among which long set-up times, poor maintenance management and the production of defective items stand out. In order to address these issues, the implementation of specific tools such as 5S (sorting, ordering, cleaning, standardization and discipline), SMED (quick tool change) and TPM (total productive maintenance) was proposed. These strategies proved to be effective in optimizing workflows, reducing waste and improving maintenance management of extrusion equipment. The ultimate goal of these actions was to increase the efficiency of the production process, seeking to raise the OEE (Overall Equipment Efficiency) from 77.55% to 85%. The results obtained were significant, since through the implementation of 5S, a 28.8% increase was obtained in the global indicator in 5s audit. Likewise, the setup time has been progressively reduced through the implementation of the SMED tool, achieving a time optimization of 56.29%. Additionally, the implementation of the TPM component - Preventive and Autonomous Maintenance gave us an increase in the OEE of 7.03%. Finally, this improvement proposal not only addresses the operational problems of the company in the plastics industry, but is also presented as a crucial element to boost efficiency and profitability in a highly competitive sector.
