This study aimed to describe the experiences of self-compassion in patients with eating disorders who participate in a dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skills training. A qualitative methodology was employed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Data collection techniques included a sociodemographic form and a semi-structured interview, which were applied to eight female patients diagnosed with an eating disorder who had been attending an outpatient psychotherapeutic center with a DBT focus for more than six months. The main results articulate the experience according to three aspects: expectations about DBT therapy, experiences of self-compassion, and progress in psychotherapy. In general, self-compassion has been useful for participants to maintain the validity of their therapeutic process and obtain better results. It is concluded that DBT therapy develops self-compassion as a fundamental technique for the treatment of eating disorder cases.
