The tourism industry in Peru was the most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, MINCETUR prepared an emergency plan in the hopes of getting a million people visiting the country by the end of 2022; however this is small figure compared with the 4.4 million people that the country received previous to the pandemic. Cusco is an iconic place for the tourism industry in the country, as well as its main attractions like Machu Picchu, Ollantaytambo, Pisac, Qoricancha, Rainbow mountain, among others. However, its touristic supply is mainly focused in archeological sites, history and trekking. This paper tries to contribute in the reactivation of tourism presenting and innovative alternative for the country and that helps diversify the supply of touristic products currently offered. Our proposal focuses in promoting astrotourism through a planetarium and stellar observatory which complements and does not compete with the current products offered, given that most of these visits and outdoor activities happen during the day while astrotourism activities happen mainly at night. The current supply of products offered at night is very limited and one can mainly find bars and discotheques that do not fit the profile of the current visitors centered in culture, nature and adventure. Our research presents what is needed to develop the project from a technical point of view, in infrastructure (domes, projectors, telescopes) and logistics (location, transport, influxes), and it also shows and let us conclude through surveys to national and international tourists as well as travel agencies and DMCs, that there is great demand from them for such services given that over 95% of the 150 tourist surveyed would like to visit a planetarium and 80% of the travel agencies and DMCs are interested in including such a product in their current programs. Our research uses a mixed approach, descriptive and applicable. About the location, we conclude that the district of Chinchero (near Piuray lake) is strategically the ideal place for the development of our project given that is in the middle of Cusco´s touristic hub, near the city, Urubamba province and Machu Picchu town. The conditions for stargazing in the area, besides its natural beauty, seem ideal because of the low light pollution and little humidity. Our market research and economical and financial evaluation give positive results and therefore we can conclude that the project is viable.
