Introduction: Anemia is currently one of the main health problems. The WHO estimates that, worldwide, 42% of children under 5 years of age and 40% of pregnant women are anemic. Objective: To evaluate the association between anemia and ethnicity in children from 6 to 59 months of age. Methodology: An analytical cross-sectional study was carried out, focused on the analysis of secondary databases of the National Demographic and Family Health Survey (ENDES) for the year 2021. Finally, descriptive and multivariate statistics were estimated considering complex samples, calculating the factors associated with Poisson regression models to calculate adjusted PR. Results: 17,322 children were studied where the frequency of anemia in Peru was 28.57% in children 6-59 months of age. Likewise, when evaluating the factors, it was found that children belonging to the Amazonian indigenous ethnic group (PRa 1.33, 95% CI, 1.18-1.50), as well as to the Quechua-Aymara ethnic group (PRa 1.15, 95% CI 1.07-1.23) were associated with a higher prevalence of anemia cases. Finally, living in the natural regions of both the jungle (PRa 1.46, 95%CI 1.29-1.65) and Sierra (PRa 1.62, 95%CI 1.44-1.83) is associated with a higher risk of anemia. Conclusions: The Amazonian and Quechua-Aymara indigenous people are associated with a higher prevalence of childhood anemia in their population with 50.66% and 35.64% respectively. New health strategies should be created to standardize the types of iron supplementation and in this way, facilitate its use by the user, increasing adherence to treatment.
