This research aims to describe the representation of mexicanidad or Mexicanness in the Spanish dubbing of the movie Coco (2017), from a multimodal perspective. For this purpose, the semiotic modes used in the dubbing, such as verbal and nonverbal language, will be examined to convey the cultural essence. Likewise, elements such as music, folklore, and colloquial expressions that comprise the Mexican imaginary will be considered. In this regard, Coco (2017), a movie set in the Mexican celebration of the Day of the Dead, has been criticized for its representation of Mexicanness. Although its Spanish dubbing was done exclusively in Latin American Spanish, there is a lack of attention to Latin American and Mexican identity in audiovisual translation studies (AVT). This study is based on the idea that Coco (2017) uses modes such as words, images, and music to represent Mexicanness, transmitting its cultural identity through dubbing. Discourse and design play a key role in the multimodal cohesion of this representation. Through content analysis and contrastive multimodal analysis, it will be analyzed the modes, their interaction and the cultural imaginary that exists in the construction of the representation of Mexicanness, both in the source text and in the Spanish dubbing of Coco (2017).
