The objective of this research work is the evaluation of the matrix suction that may present the clay of the locality of Banda de Shilcayo - San Martin, in order to determine the characteristic curve that represents the study soil and validate the results obtained with theoretical models. In addition, it will be sought to associate the matrix suction variable and the moisture content with the increase or decrease of the mechanical parameters of the soil. Matrix suction will be determined using the guidelines described in the international standard ASTM D-5298 "Standard test method for measuring soil suction potential using filter paper". This indirect method uses filter papers as passive sensors for the evaluation of matrix suction in soil, since, as the filter paper is in direct contact with the soil sample inside an airtight container, the pore water vapor pressure of the specimen is balanced with the partial water vapor pressure of the air. The matrix suction will be measured in twenty specimens using the filter paper method, however, before performing the suction measurement, different amounts of moisture will be imposed on the specimens for a certain period of time, thus obtaining enough information to plot the soil characteristic curve, which describes the relationship between the matrix suction versus different amounts of moisture (degree of saturation, volumetric moisture or volumetric moisture). It will be sought to show the relationship between the variation of suction and the water retention capacity in the soil pores and, finally, a comparison will be made between the mechanical parameters of the soil under study with different imposed amounts of matrix suction. The aim of this research is to contribute to the limited knowledge that we currently have about unsaturated soils, a broad and complex subject, in the hope that it will serve as a support for further research.
