Objective: To assess whether there is an association between alcohol use disorders: harmful alcohol consumption and alcohol dependence, with overweight or obesity in adults with risk consumption of alcoholic beverages in Peru. Methodology: A sub analysis of the 2019 Demographic Health Survey (DHS) was performed, excluding incomplete surveys, pregnant women, and the population under 20 years and over 59 years old. The presence of alcohol use disorders was determined through the questions of the DHS Health Questionnaire that make up the Spanish version of the MINI - International Neuropsychiatric Interview 5.0.0. of the year 2000. The association between the independent variable "Alcohol use disorders: harmful alcohol consumption and alcohol dependence" and the dependent variable "Overweight or obesity" was analyzed using the Chi-square statistical test and crude and adjusted Poisson regression. Results: Data from 2961 people who consumed alcoholic beverages for at least 12 days during the last 12 months (risk consumption) were analyzed. Of these, 1096 (34.4%) had dependence or harmful consumption of these beverages, and 2058 (70.0%) were overweight or obese. With a p-value > 0.05, no significant association was found between the independent variable "Alcohol use disorders: harmful alcohol consumption and alcohol dependence" and the dependent variable "overweight or obesity"; however, the linear trend test was significant. Conclusion: In the adult population aged 20 to 59 years, with risky alcohol consumption, alcohol use disorders tend to be related to the presence of overweight or obesity in such a way that, as the severity of the disorder increases, the proportion of overweight/obesity decreases. Future studies should corroborate this finding.
