Background: Various studies have shown possible effects of inorganic nitrate supplementation from the diet related to BP reduction, which could be beneficial in the elderly population after physical exercise. Objective: To evaluate the benefit provided by nitrates from different vegetable sources and to identify the impact of supplementation from different sources of nitrate in older adults with high BP values after exercising. Eligibility criteria: Primary research articles, published within the period of January 2002 - July 2020, original and peer-reviewed in English, Spanish or Portuguese. Data source: The search was carried out in the Pubmed, Scielo, Scopus and Web of Science databases. Methodology: With the help of online databases, a total of 4 publications were selected that evaluated intervention with dietary nitrates in older adult participants with elevated BP levels after physical exercise. Results: A decrease in BP was observed in 3 of the 4 articles included, where only 1 was significant; while in the remaining study there were no changes in BP. Discussion: The effects on BP levels of ingesting inorganic nitrates were varied. The change in SBP, DBP and mean levels was different; also in some values there was no effect. Conclusions: The evidence is insufficient to conclude an exact dose of dietary nitrates. However, these could be considered a vital component for nutritional intervention.
