Pyrethroids are synthetic insecticides used in a wide variety of applications. Cyfluthrin is a broad spectrum Type II pyrethroid insecticide, largely used in agriculture, in human and veterinary medicine and added even in household spray formulations. The nervous system is the main target, mainly due to its effect on voltagesodium channels, as well as on calcium channels and to its interaction with the GABA receptor-ionophore complex. Although initially considered to have a low toxicity in mammals, studies have been conducted to evaluate pyrethroids neurotoxicity in rodents and other animals, causing in rats the CS-syndrome, characterized by salivation, ataxia, hyperexcitation, convulsions, and paralysis. There is limited information about the toxicokinetics of cyfluthrin and its effects on the monoamines levels in the central nervous system (CNS). The present investigation includes two objectives: i) to study in male Wistar rats the toxicokinetics of cyfluthrin after single intravenous (IV) (3 mg/kgbw) and oral (20 mg/kg bw) doses, and ii) to examine in male Wistar rats the effects of cyfluthrin after oral exposure (1, 5, 10 and 20 mg/kg bw, 6 days) on brain region monoamine levels...
