Background: Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a set of signs and symptoms resulting from progressive arterial obliteration, leading to a deficit in tissue blood supply. This disease is common worldwide; we do not have any frequency studies at the national level. Objectives: To describe the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of patients diagnosed with PAD in a national level III-2 referral hospital during the period 2019-2023. Materials and methods: A descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional case series study with non-probability sampling with a total sample size of 500 patients. Patients were classified using the Fontaine and WIFI criteria and associated factors were explored. Results: There were 298 men (59.6%) and 202 women (40.4%) with a mean age of 69.3. Advanced age of 68 years (SD+/-12), having a disease duration of 16 years (SD+/-5), presenting Chronic Kidney Disease, presenting ulcers and gangrene in the foot, having the habit of smoking, HDL-C values of 45 (SD+/-11), LDL-C of 93 (SD+/-62) and fasting glucose of 240 (SD+/-47) were significantly associated with a greater severity of PAD. Conclusion: Clinical and epidemiological characteristics determined that elderly men with prolonged disease duration were the most affected. Factors associated with the development of severe forms of peripheral arterial disease include the presence of ulcers and gangrene in the foot, smoking, chronic kidney disease and alterations in HDL-C, LDL-C and basal glucose values.
