Introduction: National and international studies establish an association between psychiatric polypharmacy and negative outcomes, such as increased frailty, cognitive impairment and decreased quality of life in patients, particularly older adults. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of psychiatric polypharmacy in the study population, and its association with sex, age and diagnosis. Materials and methods: The study is observational, descriptive, cross-sectional, retrospective, and was carried out on a sample of 933 older adult patients from the outpatient service of the Víctor Larco Herrera Hospital. A univariate analysis was performed to determine the prevalence of psychiatric polypharmacy, while to determine the association between variables, a bivariate analysis was performed, using the Chi Square test and the Mann-Whitney U test. Results: An 81,35% of polypharmacy was found, and a significant association with sex, but not with age. Likewise, there was an association between 7 diagnosed mental disorders and the presence of psychiatric polypharmacy, since the p value for the Pearson Chi Square test or Fisher test, as the case may be, obtained values of p < 0,05. The most prescribed psychotropic drugs were antipsychotics (69,43%), anxiolytics (65,21%), antidepressants (52,70%), anticholinergics (23,45%) and mood stabilizers (20,42%). 41,50% received 2 psychotropic drugs; 33,72% 3 psychotropic drugs; 17,26% 4 psychotropic drugs; 6,46% 5 psychotropic drugs; 0,92% 6 psychotropic drugs, and 0,13% 8 psychotropic drugs. Conclusions: There is a high prevalence of psychiatric polypharmacy in the population studied, mainly in people diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and particularly in the female population. The most commonly prescribed medications were antipsychotics, antidepressants and benzodiazepines.
